HIS MAJESTY'S CONSULATE GENERAL,
SHANGHAI,
22nd April, 1915.
Sir,
I have the honour to report a visit from Mr. C.M.
Bain, the manager of Maitland and Company, Limited, who
are the largest auctioneers of piecegoods at this port.
Mr. Bain stated that to-day several of the chief
Chinese dealers asked him how it was that German firms
could still undertake orders for goods from England as
though no state of war existed. In Chinese eyes such a
fect could only mean that the power of Germany was felt
in England to be sure of success.
Mr. Bain explained that German firms held certain
popular chops; but the dealers ridiculed this resson
declaring that within a month, the time necessary for
apprising their up-country cliente, the goods if up to
standard would be as readily marketable as ever under
British
Sir John Jordan, G.C.I.E., K.C.B., K.C.M.G.,
His Majesty's Minister,
W
PEKING.
